A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown

Before you laugh, yes, Cupcake is her real given name. I happen to be home from work one day and was watching the Montel Williams show, and this story was featured. Man, this story caught my attention and held it. Because I am a firm believer in the mantra that we often limit ourselves and it doesn't matter what circumstances are thrown your way, you can overcome and succeed in anything you set your mind to. So anyway back to the story, so Cupcake Brown, lost her mother at the age of 11 and her world was literally turned upside down. I cannot even tell you the challenges that were thrown this lady's way. I can honestly say that I don't know if I could have withstood the things she had to endure. I'll start and give a little timeline of her life. Because that's exactly what she does in her well written memoir, A Piece of Cake.

So at the age of eleven she found her mother dead in her bed, and stayed with her on the floor holding her body all night , rocking her and humming their favorite song.

Then, she found out the man that she had known to be her father was actually not, but that her real father was a money hungry S.O. B. that cared for no one but himself.

He showed up at court to claim her only because he thought that he would be collecting life insurance as her guardian.

When he found out he couldn't get a dime, he dropped her off at a foster home with a stranger that literally treated foster kids like slaves. They cleaned her house and she beat them on a daily basis all the while allowing her nephew to rape her at will.

At the age of 13, she ran away numerous times only to find herself in a world of prostitution. Yep, at 13, this is her new life. She runs away, works for a pimp for a number of year and picked up a habit of drugs that its uncertain can be contained. Her love for drugs causes her to steal, partake in credit card scams as well continue to be a prostitute.

Finally, she goes to live with a aunt of her in South Central, LA, thinking she's leaving for a better life, she finds herself being "jumped"into the a well known gang in the area. All the while she still has this insatiable appetite for any and every kind of drug known to man. She describes herself as a "trashcan junkie', will take any and everything, but her favorite was crack.

After finding herself in this gang, she's shot but luckily survives.

Her turning point in the book is when she finds herself behind a dumpster, which she's been getting high for 4 days straight. She then comes to the
realization that she needs some serious help.

With the help of her employer she gets into a treatment program where she finds her life savior, a lady that is her mentor, and also finds her faith in God.

With the help of her mentor, she enrolls in community college, and eventually she goes to Law School. Yes, she not only completes law school but she passes the bar the first time taken. Cupcake is an attorney for one of the 25th largest law firms in the nation.

My Question to you is , "could you have gone through half of this and still have the will to not only go on,but succeed? Her story is a story of hope.

This story is an inspiration, to always remember that its not where you started but where you end up.

This is a must read, I cant even describe the circumstances and situations that this lady had to endure to make it day to day. This one that should be read by anyone that feels you're being tested and that your stuck in situations with no light at the end of the tunnel.
